MOLDAVIAN RISKS – FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL SCALE
BACAU, 16 – 19 May 2012
Environmental risks come in many forms. Earthquakes and floods are the best known because they are the most common. Nevertheless, modern society is also threatened by other risks, such as climate change, industrial pollution, earthquakes, and the hazard of impacts from outer space. While the risks from these hazards are worldwide, disasters affect local communities, which should try to find an appropriate response to them. World-renowned experts in these fields will meet at “Vasile Alecsandri” University of Bacau in May 2012 to discuss these hazards, and engage the local community in addressing them. In Moldavia, earthquakes associated with the seismic zone in the southeastern Carpathian Mountains have produced much loss of life and economic damage. Flooding of the Danube, Siret and Prut rivers is an ongoing hazard as well.
One of the major activities of this conference aims to raise students` interest in and public awareness about Earth's sciences, as well as to enhance Earth science learning of the students. All major areas of Earth's Sciences, including geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, and environmental sciences, can become topics for the competition. The competition consists of an oral presentation and questions regarding the students’ work. It is important to measure the participants’ thorough knowledge and understanding of Earth's sciences areas, knowing that the top three students will receive free registration for the next European Geosciences Union (EGU) meeting (in 2013).
This conference can be seen as the very first edition of a series of meetings linked to Moldavian risks. Therefore,Bacauwill become a center of promoting higher education via such scientific activities.
